Day: 968 Shirt: New Order - USA tour Color: White Brand: Jerzees 363 Source: My New Order USA tour shirt form yesterdays overlap. i never got around to posting it up on here. Im cramming as much as i can in before day 1000.
Day: 962 Shirt: Big Drill Car - Couch Tour ‘88 Color: White Brand: Hanes Fifty-Fifty Source: really found one of the best T-shirt scores ever this year. If you thought Descendents was one of my favorite bands this band is hot on the tail of them. I really can’t get enough of their music. i never missed a chance to see them, but in ‘88 I had no idea who they were just yet. So when this shirt poped up it was the only 2nd time i had seen it. the first time i was smart enough tot document it
Clearly as you can see the ruler my intention was in case i ever needed to remake this shirt i could and do it proper. but notice the difference one is B/W and one has a Red Logo? crazy right? i mean only crazy if you are a nerd who collects Big Drill Car Tour shirts. but to have only seen two of these shirts in my life and both of them are different makes me wonder, which one was first and is there another edition? SO many questions. This EP was a fucking epic piece of work. for a debut. i remember listening to it so much and tripping about that the car crash sound at the end of Mag Wheel was the exact same Car Crash sound effect on Black Flag’s Drinking and Driving song. i know it sounds stupid but back then it seems so unimaginable! later on in life i get it. but back to this shirt..
Day: 946 Shirt: Bad Religion - Recipe For Hate North American Tour 1994 Color: Black Brand: Fruit Of the Loom Source: So much i hate to say about this record. I’m sure ill get half way and get bored of hearing my self think and tune out but we will see.
The Last Epitaph album before they sign to Atlantic and release Stranger Than Fiction. the first Bad Religion album i assume to have..what… Slide Guitar? thats not punk, right? yeah they did it. maybe the punk ness was putting slide guitar in and not giving a fuck what you or I thought. thats punk. Shit i just looked if i would have held out till June i would shave hit the 20 year anniversary for this. Oh well i’m not that good of a planner i guess, at least when it comes to what shirt I’m going to wear 5 months from now.
I totally have vivid memories of this record coming out, i don’t know why, but i do. i remember it getting kind of shitty reviews but i was really into this record. i still think it holds up today. American Jesus, Kerosine and Recipe For Hate are undeniable songs for sure. I think i really enjoyed that they showed some growth, part of me really enjoys when a band grows maybe cause i feel like i am growing with them. when i say feels like i am really only fooling myself tho.
I think part of the reason i remember this album so much is cause i feel like punk rock was really peaking right around this time. or re-peaking, or peeking again depending on your perspective. I mean just a few months prior Epitaph released Pennywises' Unknown Road, NOFX released Punk In Drublic, Dookie came out and was blowing up. 24hr Revenge Therapy was fucking my life up in a big way. Guttermouth came out this year and come to think of it so did Face To FaceBig Choice. man i feel like i was balls deep in west coat punk rock in this era…i mean who am i kidding i was for sure, but damn it seems like yesterday. it always seems like the 4 eras are awesome. 1984 was a great year in music, 1994 was for sure. 2004 was as well. maybe every decade people get sick of hearing and doing the same old shit and decide to step up their game. Dam here’s to 2014 and music and lets hope it can live up to the legacy! see what i mean? i get to this point and i started out listening to Recipe for Hate and i have gone to Pennywise, Jawbreaker and now Fugazi. fuggin shit i miss that band.
Day: 940 Shirt: Scorpions - Double Thunder World Tour 2003 Color: Heather Grey Brand: PolyGram Source: they just don’t make art for records like this anymore. its a shame. i can’t even wrap my brain around what is going on with this guy in this picture. this is normally the art fro the Blackout album so maybe that explains the head dressing he has. perhaps he blacked out then woke up with some forks in his eyes for some reason? perhaps some Chef beat the shit out of him and this was payback. to be honest id be pissed too it looks painful , but really i m more concerned with his head i hope he doesn’t fall asleep and go into a coma like that. On the plus side his stache is pretty fucking dirty and good. so he has that going for him.
Scorpions used to be super metal to me as a kid now it just seems borderline butt rock but i am still down with it. dudes can write some hooks thats for sure. in my day if your rolled up on some fools and they were wearing Scorpions gear you treaded lightly thats just how it was.
Day: 900 Shirt: New Order - Low-Life US Tour Color: Black Brand: [Blank] Source: This really might be the record (or in my case Cassette) that started off my musical addiction. I remember it was the first album i fell in love with from beginning to end. it was the perfect soundtrack to my teenage youth. it was slightly angry, there was a lot of songs about girls and love and it felt like it didn’t care if you liked it or not cause it was going to be what it was going to be. If you were ready to get on board with it then it would leave you behind.
When i was a young teenager i used to live in a trailer behind my house int he back yard. my mom and her boyfriend decided they were going to use my room in the house to grow weed and so i needed to live int he trailer out back. the plus side was i could come and go as i wanted and no one knew, have friends over, girls and no one would know. the downside is that it got kinda lonely at times. I think a common misconception is that kids would love it if you didn’t give them boundaries, but the reality of it is, having all this freedoms at age 14 made you feel like the parents didn’t care. maybe they didn’t really. i was merely a tenant in my moms house rarely to hang out inside with the exception to shower and maybe get some food if there was any to be had. so many nights were spent alone in my trailer / room with my 3 cassettes. the Smiths - "Strangeways here We Come,” the Cure “Staring at the Sea - The Singles,” and New Order "Low-Life." Need less to say these tapes gave me comfort and company in times when i really needed it most. during the crazy girlfriend who checked herself in to the mental institution and then met another guy while she was there. crapy high school and me not ever going cause no one woke me up when i overslept cause i was isolated int he backyard. and when my first sponsor me package came form A-1 Meats almost validating the 10 hours of skateboarding i was doing a day.
The ne dog this story is not only is this really one of the greatest albums of all time aside form my personal feelings but i also feel like i lived through so much shit and this album was right there with me. through the highs and the lows New Order would play me to sleep almost every night saying tomorrows a new day lil buddy… rest up.
Day: 897 Shirt: They Might Be Giants - Looky At The New Tour Hats Color: Heather Grey Brand: Generic Source: Im not sure if They Might be Giants Smoke weed or not, but this strikes me as one of those things that might be suuuuper funny when you are stoned than then you make it without running it though anyone and no one gets it. not even you. you just ask yourself what was i thinking? weed. stay in school kids.
Day: 896 Shirt: the Smiths - I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish Color: Olive Green Brand: American Apparel Power Washed Source: #3 in the series of 5 Smiths shirts i made this month. it was originally supposed to be a shirt for every single off of my favorite Smiths album Strangeways.. got kaiboshed cause i couldn’t find good art for “Last Night I dreamt” and Stop Me just looked silly. I was going to add Sheila Take a Bow too since it would have been close to that era..but blah bah..turned into what it was.
I really love tho song tho, it is the one that always gets me when i listen to the record, i don’t know why but it instantly transports me to my high school Jr year driving around my Orange 1970 VW fastback with this cassette in the player. I’m not sure i will ever have such vivid memories of an music association again in my life, and i think when i am 70 i will still look upon it just as fondly. that old VW smell, the morning light driving my self to school, and this song playing…
this shirt is only 1 of 2 i made these on American Apparel Power Washed t’s cause i was bummed that Tultex didn’t make a green shirt so i had to make it on black, but i wanted a green that would match the single cover
cause i am stickler like that. this was as close as i could come with out doing some sort of dying to achieve this color. since i am not prepared to do bulk shirt dying you got what you got. the other was for my wife who decided it was to big so it then got given to my friends girlfriend who i hope is appreciating it like it deserves. it looks beautiful. almost as beautiful as the song itself.
for those of you nerds that are a level 5 like i am here are the three version that got printed.
Day: 893 Shirt: Victims Family - Headache Remedy L/S Color: Black Brand: Lizard Source: I’m guessing few of you know who Victims Family is out there unless you are form Northern California. Im guessing fewer of you like them. Clearly an influence to Mike Patton at some point. Ill Dumb it down for you. Fans of Butthole Surfers, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, anything Mike Patton did. Camper Van Beethoven, Primus, MCM and The Monster or Nomeansno.
Its Free Jazzy Punk that is kinda neurotic, but a hell of a lot of fun to see live. My friends use to play it to drive me crazy but i eventually came around. i saw them play so many shows in Sacramento i feel like i was a fan by default.
anyways if those bands above interest you go take a look and see for yourself. if they don’t i’d steer clear of it.
stoked to find this in my pile of long sleeves. its like a goldmine there, so many discoveries. I’m glad it is cold now so i can start breaking out a few of them. BONUS on this long sleeve is that it is form this era where there are no cuffs. the shirt just ends. i was a huge fan of that. i hated the constricting part of the sleeve.
Day: 883 Shirt: New Order - North American Tour 2012 Color: Grey Brand: Delta Medium Weight Source: From the tour last year with out Peter Hook. was it still good, fuck yes. would i go again, in a heartbeat! did i end up seeing Peter hook the next year solo. fuckin’ A I did. was that good? yeah, surprisingly so. guy still has some energy and can rock out. I hear he is playing next tear a few albums all the way through, Brotherhood and Low Life to be exact. If you are a New Order Fan i highly recommend going to at least check it out, it is still worthy of the New Order name.
Unfortunately for Peter he doesn’t get the luxury of playing under the New Order Moniker and doesn’t have the luxury of the giant venues and big stage set ups.
New Order the other hand kills it. Yeah there was No Peter but it was still epic and you cant replace Bernards voice. so good. New Order was such an amazing band….
