Source: I kinda think this was the last Danzig album i could handle. they never seemed to recover form this point on. Not to say that they are horrible now, but there seems to ave been a conscious turn in the music, and the cast he played with. I dunno, i may squeeze Danzig IV in there someplace if i am really in the zone, but maybe its just the American Recordings that made it better. I will still go see him live..I mean i bought tickets to the Samhain 30 show here in LA but now i won’t be here and won’t even get to see that. my only hope is it will be better than last time i saw him at Fun Fun Fun on the Legacy Tour, where he complained he couldn’t get French Onion Soup…bummer.
But i always try to give him the benefit of the doubt. Imagine if he complained about every time someone spit on him at a show , or he didn’t get paid the money he was supposed to get when they were in Misifts.
But here is my idea. do a super rad Misfits tour. advertised by flyers only. keep it raw, and silkscreen your own shirts again at the merch stands, and get back to the roots of it all. the fun. like this photo below where Danzig is on stage fist pumping to the Big Boys side of stage. he looks so happy back then. a rare Danzig smiling moment. i love this photo that Pat Blashill took. a real Gem
Shirt: Stereolab - The Underground Is Coming 1999 Tour
Color: Baby Blue
Brand: Hanes Beefy-T
Source: in 1999 I went to see Stereolab for what i think was the last time. it was def the last time i would see them as complete band, so sad. a few years later Mary Hansen would be hit by a truck while riding her bicycle and would die. Stereolab would never recover and never be the same. she gave the band a distinct sound that was easily recognized and in my opinion really really missed.
This how in particular was a good one too, the Filmore in SF with Olivia Tremor Control and PapaM (aka Dave Pajo from Slint and Zwan). I bought this shirt and this 7” and some how ended up losing the shirt, or it was stolen, or wherever the shirt vortex is that they go to. whatever it is, this shirt went into it. until recently i found it again and we were reunited. the vinyl..its funny i don’t feel any connection to that at all, but this shirt takes me back.
Source: So J Mascis, main dude from Dinosaur Jr (for those of you who live under a rock) has a new solo album out today called Tied to a Star. I am always looking for good reasons to wear a shirt on this blog but this one hits on so many levels for me.
A: I clearly love Dinosaur Jr. - they have been a big influence on me since my 20’s, no brainer.
B: It’s on Sub Pop. I’ve made my feelings clear here about labels, i don’t love them all that much; I have worked with a lot and Sub Pop is one that is consistently great. Great people, great art, and great artists. I am always happy to support a label like this.
C: I can distinctly remember the first solo J Mascis album he put out, Martin & Me (PS: Sub Pop, wouldn’t hurt if you re-issued this)
I’m fairly confident it wasn’t a hit back then, probably went over way too many heads, but it was a clear indicator that his “acoustic music” had way more power and drive than most rock bands. It did these loud Dinosaur Jr songs justice and that was not easy. AND, full disclosure, there is one of the best Smiths covers of “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” that really sold me on this album. If this album was a baseball game and it was J Mascis in the lead 101-98, the cover of “Boy” was the audio version of J doing a 3 point fade away at the buzzer with double team coverage. BOOM goes the dynamite!
D: And most importantly, J, i think, does some of his best music on these solo records. His last album Several Shades of Why was so fucking good. I’m amazed he can hold back these great songs like “Several Shades of Why” and “Too Deep” and not make them Dinosaur Jr songs (PS note to J I would love to hear Dinosaur Jr version of a J Mascis album..just saying). This new album is even better than the last and I’d venture to say it’s the best thing he has done solo ever. Yeah i said it, but i really do believe it. It has a lil Cat Power cameo too, and i know he did it live so i am guessing there is a recorded version of it too, but he does a great Mazzy Star Fade Into You cover.
My point is, if you are reading this blog then i would say chances are you are a Dinosaur Jr Fan already, so going out and buying this album and supporting a guy who has been making great music for punk rock for many many years should be easy for you. I tell you what , skip buying that dumb app you will never use and go to www.subpop.com and support two entities that have been giving you great shit for over 2 decades. FUCK - it is asinine that i have to point out how much of a no brainier this should be really. Get the Loser vinyl (if it’s not sold out), the shirt, and let places like Sub Pop and J Mascis know that you do care and it DOES matter when they do something. If not you might as well turn on your radio station and listen to the garbage that they have been playing. The same dog every hour. I dunno, if you don’t support you might as well get a bumper sticker that says I’d rather be Twerking. Or the Twerk store called and they are out of you.
Source: Finally got around to breaking out a few gems that i got from a fellow Tumblr user. stoked to be able to cherry pick a few great shirts and keep them alive for another decade or two.
the Damned is just one of those bands that paved the way hard for so many bands to come. i feel like they should be getting royalty checks from every new punk band for making their lives easier. this band was punk when people were still figuring out what being punk meant. they are hard OG’s that deserve lot of respect. i tip my hat to them fellas.
Source: this is from a Pig Pile box set that was purchased sometime in the late 90’s. actually this isn’t the EXACT shirt. that one was ruined and i recently after much stewing over how much i missed it found and acquired another. i forget sometimes how good this band was. Pig Pile box came with a Live VHS. it never really ever occurred to me of the box was a bootleg or not i think it was official but back then you bought stuff at Tower Records and so you assumed it was all legit form distributors.
Source: for some reason i was awaken today with this old Mr. t song stuck in my head called “fill in the Blank.” luckily for me i had this shirt sitting on top of a pile of stuff and it was here to complete the circle for me. i will undoubtedly go put on their album “Big Black Bugs Bleed Blue Blood,” and inevitably end up listening to the entire Mr. T Catalog. why? cause i can. i encourage anyone out there who hasn’t ever discovered this band, to get a start on it. they were a solid cornerstone to my teens and twenties.
Source: im not ashamed to admit it. i never listened to Mudhoney that much as a kid. I’m mean i listened to it but i didn’t hear it.
I had records and listened to them, but much like the White Men Cant Jump scene i felt like i wasn’t HEARING Mudhoney. i say that because when i listen to them now i enjoy it way more. i find parts in it that are so iconic and sound masterful i can’t believe i didn’t notice them before. It just goes to show that you can always return to music that you know is good but didn’t either gel with or appreciate as much as you could’ve.
