Source: I kinda think this was the last Danzig album i could handle. they never seemed to recover form this point on. Not to say that they are horrible now, but there seems to ave been a conscious turn in the music, and the cast he played with. I dunno, i may squeeze Danzig IV in there someplace if i am really in the zone, but maybe its just the American Recordings that made it better. I will still go see him live..I mean i bought tickets to the Samhain 30 show here in LA but now i won’t be here and won’t even get to see that. my only hope is it will be better than last time i saw him at Fun Fun Fun on the Legacy Tour, where he complained he couldn’t get French Onion Soup…bummer.
But i always try to give him the benefit of the doubt. Imagine if he complained about every time someone spit on him at a show , or he didn’t get paid the money he was supposed to get when they were in Misifts.
But here is my idea. do a super rad Misfits tour. advertised by flyers only. keep it raw, and silkscreen your own shirts again at the merch stands, and get back to the roots of it all. the fun. like this photo below where Danzig is on stage fist pumping to the Big Boys side of stage. he looks so happy back then. a rare Danzig smiling moment. i love this photo that Pat Blashill took. a real Gem
Source: Finally got around to breaking out a few gems that i got from a fellow Tumblr user. stoked to be able to cherry pick a few great shirts and keep them alive for another decade or two.
the Damned is just one of those bands that paved the way hard for so many bands to come. i feel like they should be getting royalty checks from every new punk band for making their lives easier. this band was punk when people were still figuring out what being punk meant. they are hard OG’s that deserve lot of respect. i tip my hat to them fellas.
Source: for some reason i was awaken today with this old Mr. t song stuck in my head called “fill in the Blank.” luckily for me i had this shirt sitting on top of a pile of stuff and it was here to complete the circle for me. i will undoubtedly go put on their album “Big Black Bugs Bleed Blue Blood,” and inevitably end up listening to the entire Mr. T Catalog. why? cause i can. i encourage anyone out there who hasn’t ever discovered this band, to get a start on it. they were a solid cornerstone to my teens and twenties.
Source: another Band I’m really psyched on seeing at fyffest next week. since 2008 Ty Segall has put out at least one album a year. normally i am a fan of editing. meaning just because you wrote a song and recorded it doesn’t make it good and you don’t have to put it out. but Ty seems to have it in him to crank out not only many great songs, but can also make each album sound unique whether it be album collaborators like White Fence (my fav collar he has done)
which is kind of an amazing album i think. Cause i think when you crank and write like he does you only really refine your craft. you get more technical, more comfortable, and confident. Manipulator to me is an album that is just telling people, oh you think i can only make a garage album..well suck on this! its got hooks, great production the works. it rides that fine line like i think In Utero did where it was polished but still punk with the roots fully in there and obvious.
Luckily for me, not only is he playing fyffest but he is also doing 4 Nights at the Echo in Los angeles, where he undoubtedly could play every song he has ever written in a row. who knows what he does. but i bet each night will be fucking good and he will def melt some faces and blow some minds.
and he has some great support bands, like the Zig Zags and Endless Bummer. click the image to buy tickets if you will be in the LA area. cause lets face it, you are dumb if you don’t. but i mean that in a nice way…like you would kick yourself if i told you 10 years form now you could a seen him 4 nights in a row at the echo. you low what i mean? go buy manipulator when it comes out. its fucking good. Ps this is not a paid advertisement. i just get hyped on this guy who does rad stuff.
Source: I saw this in the closet today and i reached for it it made me smile. i love it how simple it is a s a design, but knowing the bands music you know what it means to them. man Jay Adams dying today sucks, fucking remind me about how much of a loss it is that we lost John Huges so many years back. I hate that creative pioneers die, but i love what they gave us. it really only teaches you to enjoy today and do what ever you can.
Jay left the best quote in skateboarding.. ”You don’t stop p skateboarding cause you got old. You got old because you quit skateboarding.” I feel like that applies to a lot of aspects in our life. once you stop contributing, celebrating and do what you love, you start to die. so to all o you still breathing out there. keep listening, playing and going to see music. keep skateboarding, drawing, and creating.
Shirt: Bad Religion - How Could Hell Be Any Worse?
Source: yesterdays pick. i get so lay on the weekends, but truth be told this classic album is also included on the previous pick form a week or two ago on Bad Religion’s - 80-85 shirt. if you didn’t scoop this album up back in the day you got it bundled in on the comp, but id say this artwork, while 80-85 is classic, this is way better. this one really tells the album title through this album cover.
my how the LA Skyline has changed. from 1982 to now, 32 years later so much has changed
Source: unlike yesterdays shirt. you probably won’t see many Alice Donut shirts around. it was kind of an underrated band and i think missed the mark for many people. sometimes i get the feeling tho that bands feel like they are succeeding if people don’t get their music. they feel validated. While i wouldn’t dare say i got Alice Donut, i did appreciate them for what they were back in the 90’s. Iw as lucky enough to see them on the bill with many bands and they were loud noisy and stood out. and i appreciate that. when i listen to it today, as in current day, they sound like a totally different band to me. its kinda like when i first heard Kiss for the first time when i was in High School and i was like, “this is supposed to be Metal???, this Beth song is some pussy sounding shit!!” What i am saying is that 25 years ago this music sounded super noisy and angry and now i can’t help but think this was “Crazy” to me back then? ahhh the times they do change.
Source: This is not a rare shirt or even hard to get actually. its still here in the Descendents Kings Road Store. Not that there is anything wrong with it, quite the contrary actually. I’m just pointing out that people kinda slept on this design. its a really great classic pocket / back print design that i think is done super well. very Wes Anderson Rushmore i think. I have never asked Chris himself but that is what I’m guessing was inside his head as he crafted this. And i think most people kinda miss out on the Milo Goes to College tie in. very subtle. clever. great color way. all the makings of an amazing shirt. Kudos Chris.
As I was wearing this in today’s second Day of Screen printing Workshop there was this kid in there. probably just out of high school. From Modesto. His Mom sent him there so he could open his own screneprinting shop cause “Everyone they and their friends order shirts from never ship on time, and he hand a band himself and wanted to make band shirts.” Pretty cool of him mom to do that. it was rad he was crafting his bands shirt in there with a lil hand drawn logo, damn i wish i could remember the name of the band right now i would link it. i will probably remember it in 3 days while i am eating dinner. anyways it was just cool to see this kind wanting to DIY at his age reminded me a lot of myself and what i was stoked on. i swear most screen printing shops must start because people have bands and want to print shirts.
So he looks at my Descendents shirt and says sick shirt dude, I’m really digging that. you know the guy who drew that is a teacher at my High School. I was like yeah chrisshary i know, he’s cool huh! so i dunno, something about the whole thing was cool and got me psyched on this lil dude who was doing his thing.
