Source: So J Mascis, main dude from Dinosaur Jr (for those of you who live under a rock) has a new solo album out today called Tied to a Star. I am always looking for good reasons to wear a shirt on this blog but this one hits on so many levels for me.
A: I clearly love Dinosaur Jr. - they have been a big influence on me since my 20’s, no brainer.
B: It’s on Sub Pop. I’ve made my feelings clear here about labels, i don’t love them all that much; I have worked with a lot and Sub Pop is one that is consistently great. Great people, great art, and great artists. I am always happy to support a label like this.
C: I can distinctly remember the first solo J Mascis album he put out, Martin & Me (PS: Sub Pop, wouldn’t hurt if you re-issued this)
I’m fairly confident it wasn’t a hit back then, probably went over way too many heads, but it was a clear indicator that his “acoustic music” had way more power and drive than most rock bands. It did these loud Dinosaur Jr songs justice and that was not easy. AND, full disclosure, there is one of the best Smiths covers of “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” that really sold me on this album. If this album was a baseball game and it was J Mascis in the lead 101-98, the cover of “Boy” was the audio version of J doing a 3 point fade away at the buzzer with double team coverage. BOOM goes the dynamite!
D: And most importantly, J, i think, does some of his best music on these solo records. His last album Several Shades of Why was so fucking good. I’m amazed he can hold back these great songs like “Several Shades of Why” and “Too Deep” and not make them Dinosaur Jr songs (PS note to J I would love to hear Dinosaur Jr version of a J Mascis album..just saying). This new album is even better than the last and I’d venture to say it’s the best thing he has done solo ever. Yeah i said it, but i really do believe it. It has a lil Cat Power cameo too, and i know he did it live so i am guessing there is a recorded version of it too, but he does a great Mazzy Star Fade Into You cover.
My point is, if you are reading this blog then i would say chances are you are a Dinosaur Jr Fan already, so going out and buying this album and supporting a guy who has been making great music for punk rock for many many years should be easy for you. I tell you what , skip buying that dumb app you will never use and go to www.subpop.com and support two entities that have been giving you great shit for over 2 decades. FUCK - it is asinine that i have to point out how much of a no brainier this should be really. Get the Loser vinyl (if it’s not sold out), the shirt, and let places like Sub Pop and J Mascis know that you do care and it DOES matter when they do something. If not you might as well turn on your radio station and listen to the garbage that they have been playing. The same dog every hour. I dunno, if you don’t support you might as well get a bumper sticker that says I’d rather be Twerking. Or the Twerk store called and they are out of you.
Source: Finally got around to breaking out a few gems that i got from a fellow Tumblr user. stoked to be able to cherry pick a few great shirts and keep them alive for another decade or two.
the Damned is just one of those bands that paved the way hard for so many bands to come. i feel like they should be getting royalty checks from every new punk band for making their lives easier. this band was punk when people were still figuring out what being punk meant. they are hard OG’s that deserve lot of respect. i tip my hat to them fellas.
Source: this is from a Pig Pile box set that was purchased sometime in the late 90’s. actually this isn’t the EXACT shirt. that one was ruined and i recently after much stewing over how much i missed it found and acquired another. i forget sometimes how good this band was. Pig Pile box came with a Live VHS. it never really ever occurred to me of the box was a bootleg or not i think it was official but back then you bought stuff at Tower Records and so you assumed it was all legit form distributors.
Source: for some reason i was awaken today with this old Mr. t song stuck in my head called “fill in the Blank.” luckily for me i had this shirt sitting on top of a pile of stuff and it was here to complete the circle for me. i will undoubtedly go put on their album “Big Black Bugs Bleed Blue Blood,” and inevitably end up listening to the entire Mr. T Catalog. why? cause i can. i encourage anyone out there who hasn’t ever discovered this band, to get a start on it. they were a solid cornerstone to my teens and twenties.
Source: im not ashamed to admit it. i never listened to Mudhoney that much as a kid. I’m mean i listened to it but i didn’t hear it.
I had records and listened to them, but much like the White Men Cant Jump scene i felt like i wasn’t HEARING Mudhoney. i say that because when i listen to them now i enjoy it way more. i find parts in it that are so iconic and sound masterful i can’t believe i didn’t notice them before. It just goes to show that you can always return to music that you know is good but didn’t either gel with or appreciate as much as you could’ve.
Source: another Band I’m really psyched on seeing at fyffest next week. since 2008 Ty Segall has put out at least one album a year. normally i am a fan of editing. meaning just because you wrote a song and recorded it doesn’t make it good and you don’t have to put it out. but Ty seems to have it in him to crank out not only many great songs, but can also make each album sound unique whether it be album collaborators like White Fence (my fav collar he has done)
which is kind of an amazing album i think. Cause i think when you crank and write like he does you only really refine your craft. you get more technical, more comfortable, and confident. Manipulator to me is an album that is just telling people, oh you think i can only make a garage album..well suck on this! its got hooks, great production the works. it rides that fine line like i think In Utero did where it was polished but still punk with the roots fully in there and obvious.
Luckily for me, not only is he playing fyffest but he is also doing 4 Nights at the Echo in Los angeles, where he undoubtedly could play every song he has ever written in a row. who knows what he does. but i bet each night will be fucking good and he will def melt some faces and blow some minds.
and he has some great support bands, like the Zig Zags and Endless Bummer. click the image to buy tickets if you will be in the LA area. cause lets face it, you are dumb if you don’t. but i mean that in a nice way…like you would kick yourself if i told you 10 years form now you could a seen him 4 nights in a row at the echo. you low what i mean? go buy manipulator when it comes out. its fucking good. Ps this is not a paid advertisement. i just get hyped on this guy who does rad stuff.
Source: I had to loose a bunch of weight before i could fit back into this shirt. i wasn’t going to give it up i love it too much. i will never stop going to see Phoenix. i love them that much. its weird how 14 years ago when i was listening to mostly punk music i gravitated towards this random french band, who until only a few years ago not many people in the US cared about. its the one band i am really stoked for them they got huge and big and i think their shows got better because of it. fyffest is next week and i get to see them again, i wanna say 7th time? or maybe this will be 8. Thats a lot for a band from Versailles France. If you kinda like this band and have never seems em make sure you catch them while they are out this time round. their live show is great, engaging and everyone in the crowd has the stupid grin on their face like they are having the happiest moment of the day. very Psyched FYF put then on the bill this year. can’t fucking wait.
