Day: 1181
Shirt: Rocket From the Crypt - Scream Dracula Scream (SAVX - Savage Pencil Design)
Color:  White
Brand: Tultex
Source: Fucking love this album, Scream was such a good record and it came out on Vagrant right in the middle of Vagrants heyday.  Alkaline trio, Face to Face, Saves the Day, Hot Rod Circuit…oh and Get Up Kids..der.   everything that was coming out was either super good (see previous list) or super popular but not great (i.e. Dashboard Confessional).  don’t get me wrong its not that DC was a band band, it was just not intended for me.  far be it form me to hate on someones music because its not my type, it just wasn’t for me.
BUT Rocket.  holy shit!  the first four songs alone are a giant musical bat hitting you over the head and waking you the fuck up.  the rest of the album is great two but this ones drops bombs on you right away that the rest of the album is just aftermath of their destruction.  Any RFTC fan knows what i mean, and if you don’t believe me crack this bad boy open and listen for yourself on 11.
after a few texts back and forth with the almighty Dave Naz about art he helped me decipher the signature on this design SAVX which turned out to be a guy named Savage Pencil.  i’d heard of him before but if you asked me to cite a specific design of his i would be remiss.  until today when i looked him up and it turns out he was the guy that did Big Black’s album cover Headache

this guy i always thought had a very Pushead esque design aesthetic that i really dug.  so I’m stoked today i can finally draw a line between designs and put a name to the pencil…the Savage Pencil.

Source: you might think you have seen this shirt on this blog before, and technically that is true.  but not in this color way.  this goes goes to show the nerd-y ness i have and how i really think you can never have to many Drive Like Jehu shirts, or any Rick Froberg shirts for that matter.

so yeah I’m not afraid to rock the same shirt in every color especially when the band is fucking phenomenal.  can’t fucking wait for this band to play some proper shows next year.  cause you fucking know they will.

Day: 947Shirt: Pitchfork - Went For BurritosColor:  KahakiBrand: Fruit Of the LoomSource:  Today was as good as day as it was ever going to get to wear this shirt.  I mean today is the mans Birthday.  He was responsible for freeing slaves and the least i can do it immortalize him with this shirt and a hunger for mexican food.
I made this a few weeks back during my meltdown printing day when i tried to make too many designs in one day.  but i really love Pitchfork and wanted to make this shirt.  if for nothing else but the sublety of it all.  I am a real bug fan of Rick Froberg art and this was no exception.  although this was never on any cover you might recognize it from the insert to the Eucalyptus 12”.
Happy birthday Abe, thanks for making America a lot less disgusting.

Day: 914Shirt: Pitchfork - Eucalyptus SwingColor:  Athletic GoldBrand: Fruit Of the Loom BestSource: NO its not for the website, its the band.  I have literally never taken this record out of rotation since the 90’s, it’s that good.  Before there was Obits, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Rocket from The Crypt there was Pitchfork. a short lived debut project of Rick Froberg and John Reese.  the catalyst of all the other bands if you will.  the nucleus of this very distinctive San Diego sound on Cargo Records.  Its catchy, simple, fast, fun…its perfect.  Every year when bands announce they are doing a reunion i hold my breath for this.  i never got to see them and always wish some night at an obits show or hot snakes they will break out Saturn as an encore or something.
AND yes i did make this shirt myself.  people ask me all the time do you make all of your shirts?  the answer is no.  but when you are doing a post a day it gets hard.  you want to tai about different bands, or bands you love and they didn’t make shirts or they are impossible to find so you have to make your own destiny.  THAT and i absolutely LOVE rick Froberg Art.  dude is amazing, has great style and an impeccable sense of humor and aesthetic.  everything he makes is great design wise.  a few are available in the store but i know none of you will buy them. you can regret that later tho, its up to you
I Can tell you that this will not be the last Pitchfork post you see this week thats how much i love this band. sorry in advance if you have bad taste and don’t like Rick Froberg.

Day: 595
Shirt: Belle & Sebastian - Ampersand
Color: Navy Blue
Brand: Fruit Of the Loom Heavy
Source: In Case you are sitting at work today with not much to do and want to fill your brain with some really good information.  Pitchfork Classic released one of their documentaries this week on Belle & Sebastian’s “If You’re Feeling Sinister.”  I superbly great documentary series that takes a record and highlights the making behind it.  a visual 33 1/3 if you will.  In hindsight i should posted up the one they did on Modest Mouse in that post earlier.  that would have made sense..duh.
Either way i am a big sucker for documentaries in a big way.  Im the kind of guy that not only is interested in thew product but the making of the product.  example no t only do i enjoy a nicely crafted table with dovetails i also feel the need to figure out how the dovetails are made, how the wood is stained, and for that matter, where the wood comes from.  Im just a curious person by nature.  I think i can relate it to one of my moms husbands.  one time i asked him how does one of these lights work

Day: 454
Shirt: Pitchfork - Turquoise Trout
Color: Turquoise
Brand: Hanes
Source:  Every time i wear this shirt i get all paranoid that people will think i am repping the website of the same name.  I am pretty sure i made myself clear in in a recent post about my feelings of media influenced reviews but if  not you can re-read it here.   Don’t get me wrong i don’t hate on the site or anything, i appreciate what it has contributed to music.  its just the rating of music that i find worthless.  and Pitchfork is at the top of that media lit.  they take it a lil too far in in my opinion.  well a lot too far.
but this post is about the epic band, not the media site.  its about a band that was a spark or many fires but in my opinion none that have lit as brightly as Pitchfork.  something about the energy on this record that is fucking undeniable.  a power that was so big it was un harnisable and couldn’t be reproduced for a second record.
Would i mind if they played a gain..fuck no.  a new record?  i think at this point why fuck with it.  this record is untouchable. would Davinci try to paint another Mona Lisa?  nah, you just leave it, display it.  let people enjoy it.
Its a time capsule of power and punk.
I need to make a pitchfork shirt of this album cover and 7”  oh yes, i will.

Day #356 Drive Like Jehu - White Yank Crime Era
Color: White
Brand: Oneita
Source:  All I had to do was mention the first Pitchfork CD this morning to someone and it put me in the mode for this band.  seriously.  if you have never listened to Drive Like Jehu or Pitchfork, spend the rest of this day doing it.  nothing says summertime like some Rick Froberg vocals.  don’t ask me why, just does.

PS those of you that didn’t appreciate yesterdays shirt are tripping.   trip-iing.
