Day: 513
Shirt: Jets To Brazil - Deer
Color: Navy
Brand: Hanes Heavyweight
Source: after getting the new Forgetters record this week I jsut want to say i ‘d rather have Jets to Brazil back. let me preface that with saying that I was a big fan of the EP. loved it. but for some reason this record just fell short for me. Don’t get me wrong, its not garbage or anything, it has it moments, but there is something missing there. something the EP had the album does not. I dunno. maybe you will like it, Id be curious to know. Alls i know is that when i hear it i kinda wish there was a new Jets record instead of this.
Day #392 Jets To Brazil - Bomber Plane
Color: Navy Blue
Brand: Hanes Heavyweight 50/50
Source: Is it weird that i would be just as excited to see a Jets to Brazil reunion as i would a Jawbreaker Reunion? Im serious too. I really liked Jets a lot. I know it wasn’t Jawbreaker but it was still a damn good band and in my opinion the next best thing Blake did after Jawbreaker. and thats coming from a dude that really enjoyed the forgetters record. There was just something so endearing about that band and their songs that i really got attached to, even the hokey ones, cause i felt like they came from a real place.
It’s like when you have that friend who has this really mean gruff exterior, but when no one is looking he is helping an old lady across the street, or holding the door open for a guy with crutches. You know that even in the cheesiest moments you might witness of him, might not now seem way more sincere than cheesy. Jets To Brazil. thats what i have to say.
Day: #240 Thorns Of Life - Thorns Of Life
Color: Black
Brand: Sun
Source: This is another one of them bands that mush like my pitchfork post appear, then quickly as they came, they disappear. if you were icky and in the right place at the right time you were even more lucky to see them live. I got to see them live in Eagle Rock and it was awesome. Not that the show was all the epic, it was like a 7-10, but it was shut good to see Blake back on stage and to see all the fellas that came out of the woodwork to see them play. Punk rock is a funny boys club at times, ironically cause it is so anti club. but when you are in it you don’t really think about it, its a crew of people that all congregate at certain events.
Back to Thorns Of Life…So they never released any music, and the only thing that exists is this live album form Gilman. Gilman the raddest place on earth with 14 shitty tape decks, where you bring in a cassette and give it to the sound guy and get your own official bootleg. sucks for you if the tape has to be turned over though. i learned that lesson once. got half of an Olivelawn show. then a 15 min pause (i assume not noticing the tape stopped, and then he flipped it over). Apparently they recorded a record with J Robbins of Jawbox, but it has yet to surface. Someday i hope it does, that would rule. Sadly when i saw them they hadn’t got their shit together with merch and didn’t have any, but the next night at the show they did (fuckers) so i had to wait almost a year and get it off eBay. Worth the wait though. I’d be bummed if i didn’t get it.
Day: 023
Shirt: Jawbreaker - 24hr Revenge therapy
Color: Heather Grey
Brand: Hanes
Source: I moved to Oregon one year, it was the first time i would fever move out of Sacramento since living there for 20 something years. i have a few very vivd memories of Oregon. Eating Cinnebon for a month straight cause my roommate worked at the mall and he would bring home a box every night, only to find out later how disgusting they are in calories and fat..ewww i still shudder. i also remember being told I had a “California Attitude” by my boss at Fred Meyer when i questioned why she would rather put out rotting vegetables on display than to not put them out at all. her response. ”Because people will complain if it is not out there” my response..”don’t you think people will be more pissed when they pay money for rotten vegetables, then take them home to cook them and are bummed out?”
the last memory i have is 3 records that came out that i listened to non-stop while i lived there. Rancid’s “Out Come The Wolves”, Smashing Pumpkins “Mellon Collie & the infinite Sadness”..and lastly the topic of this post Jawbreaker “Dear You”. I remember them making a cassette single for Lurker Dark Son Of night as a promo, and i wanna say it had the Six Million Dollar Man on the cover. I was obsessed with this album, mostly because it was really crazy to me at the tie that this came out on a major label, and i was hoping it wouldn’t be ruined and turned into some “corporate rock bullshit” (that term was popular back then, so i thought i would throw it in there). Long story short, this record turned out to be one of my favorite Jawbreaker records, i travels to see them in Salem and Portland on this tour with Fluf, and Chinchilla, and glad i did so cause the breakup was shortly had thereafter. Oregon will always remind me of Jawbreaker, weird right?
Now you are probably thinking this is a shirt about 24hr, not Dear You, right? well i don’t have a dear you shirt, and i didn’t wanna tell another story about seeing samiam, green day and jawbreaker again at Gilman, berkley square or someplace in the east bay..so i wanted to take you on adventure with me to the Pacific northwest. i hope your brought an umbrella.
