Day: 697
Shirt: OMD - English Electric US Tour 2013
Color: Black

Brand: Gilden Softstyle

Source: I have been in Denver all weekend so i am playing catchup… here is number one:

I loved this show.  I gotta say i am a real big fan of this band, and have been ever since pretty in pink.  i get the feeling the band hates that reference but hey its true.  it was targeted right at me.  i didn’t know much about music at the time so the influence of Psychedelic Furs, Simple Minds, and OMD.

but that is then and English Electric is now, which i have listened to repeatedly this year.  the production of it is amazing.  it sounds like they figured out the perfect way to make new electronic music sound warm and old.  this def would make for one of those great vinyl pieces to own.  the ones where having it play through a record player would only enhance the production.  if you havet listened to the record yet, be sure to stop and take the time out and give the whole thing a listen to because it is very worth it and makes me stoked that old bands don’t just play the hits and fade away…some find a way to evolve.

Day: 696Shirt: Strikeage - Punk Rock Bowling 2013Color: Mint Green
Brand: American Apparel
Source: I know this isn’t a band shirt (technically) but we all know this was probably a shirt design for Descendents at some point or another and if it wasn’t, it should be. OR will be. this was a kind gift form Chris Shary who designed the shirt. Why? i dont really know. i do know some guys made it for PRB 2013 this year and i saw a photo of it and was all nerdy over it so Chris was kind enough to send me one. i enjoy my pen pal relationship with him. he send me things, i send him things back, and we just keep one upping each other, its fun.
THANKS CHRIS! looks great. if you wanna fill me in on what this shirt was for let me know and ill post it up here for the other nerds who will be curious I’m sure.

Sometimes its these small victories that rule.
PS i do own my own ball, bag and shoes, so know this is going to a good home.

FROM CHRIS:
OK here’s the story. This guy, Brett Baumback (the fella to my left in the photo) got a hold of me because he had a bowling team from Canada who was coming down to bowl in PRB this year. As fans of DESCENDENTS/ALL he was wondering if I’d design their team shirt. Trouble was, he wanted it to look a lot like a DESCENDENTS shirt. Before I said I would, I contacted Bill and Milo to check and see if they were cool with it. The stipulation was they would not be for sale at all. Both Bill and Milo were fine with it, so I drew this thing up specifically for a STRIKEAGE! shirt. I did utilize the same 50’s boomerang shape that I had on the back of the 2011 DESCENDENTS PRB shirt. Because of this it may look like this was a pre-existing design but it wasn’t. The team was kind enough to make shirts for the band, and you and me. That was it. You can’t find them anywhere, so it makes it even cooler. It’s an “official/unofficial” DESCENDENTS shirt! How ‘bout that?

Shirt: Ghost - Year Zero / Haze Over North American Tour 2013

Color: Black

Brand: Hanes

Source: Today marks the date of Ghost’s 2nd album Infestissumam!  If you wanna buy it, but it directly from the band here and get some good packages.  I superb follow up to 2010’s Opus Eponymous.  I can’t say enough about this band in a world where there ate 10 billion new records every year.  every band looks and sounds the same and are’t very derivative of each other.

Ghost makes it presence known adds some Entertainment  to the already entertaining show.  putting forth the effort that i think gets lost along the way when people are making record in their house.  the idea of Rock and Roll Legendry that seems to be the way of the past.  Some haters will call it a shtick others will call it some next level shit.  give me something to look at, watch, think about and daydream about.  i love the mystery.  look at Daft Punk.  15 years later no one still knows them and what they look like. no one thinks twice about them being in robot costumes.

And It Is not like the music is sub par either, its great…its dramatic, operatic , its like watching a soundtrack or a score with lyrics. with all the garbage in the world  that gets made into a broadway play, this is the only one i would go to.  a real dark metal play.  i would fucking eat that up with a knife and fork.  think about it.  smoke, giant set. shit flying across the sky.  i mean for all intents and purposes we are watching that now but on a smaller scale.  i feel like I’m on to something.  GHOST contact me and ill put this together :).

Anyways… crazy ranting aside from me you still have one more chance to see them at Coachell anext weekend..but why?  they have them play at 1PM in the sun. Fuck that whats the point.  this show should never see the light of day.

My suggestion is go see them at one of their club dates that will come to one of these cities soon.  buy tickets now before they sell out, see for yourself.  and don’t blow the opportunity to see them in some reasonable venue before they are doing what ever giant arena venue you know they will end up doing in 2-3 years.  Im looking at you guys in Denver, SF, Portland, Seattle, New York..

Day: 641
Shirt: Phoenix - bankrupt! Tour 2013
Color: Red Punch
Brand: American Apparel Power Wash
Source: First of f lemmie say FINALLY it looks like American Apparel has made a decent shirt for people who don’t like their shirts to fit tight.  It appears it is meant to be oversized a lil which means it just fits like a normal shirt yet still is soft. Enough Of That.
Yeah i went to see Phoenix again last night, they really are one of my fav all time bands.  i don’t think i have ever missed them play when they come to LA.  Last nights show only reminded me of how fucking good this band is and how much of a good mood they put me in, and i appreciate them for that.  new merch was this shirt in 4 different colors and a jersey, and one shirt with text in 2 colors.  nothing that epic, but i do like this art work so i am not complaining.
Anyone who is going to Coachella this weekend or next you are stoked go see them. sadly they play up against New Order…but I’m going to have to say as much as i am a new order fan, i would rather see Phoenix again!

Day: 618

Shirt: Chelsea Light Moving - 2013 Tour

Color: white

Brand: Canvass

Source: Surprisingly psyched to see this show last night.  i have been a hot and miss Sonic Youth fan.  i always feel like they could benefit from a bit of editing on the songs they release.  so sometimes i find myself turned off.

Going into this show i wasn’t sure what to expect, i hadn’t listened to this record yet but i wanted to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised.  not too noodly not to free jazzy, a lot of what i liked about Sonic Youth to be honest.  Thurston even threw in a Black Flag cover of Machine..  too bad for him the rest of the band was playing Damaged.  somehow it worked tho…

Day: 609

Shirt: Descendents - Australia Tour 2013

Color: Royal Blue

Brand: Gilden Ultra Cotton

Source: Chris was kind enough to have one of these shirts brought back from Australia for me.  i really dig the blue color.  some people hate colored shirts but i get sick of wearing black and white all the time.  also i think it takes a different level of designer to match a good color shirt with your art.  its easy and brainless to throw you design on black or white.  to match it to a color pallet is another story.

This design has baffled me.  not sure what the origin is.  australians in armor?  perhaps some war i am not educated on?  is this some sort of Iron Maiden?  the back i get.  :)  especially since it was the same back as the Japan Tour shirt.  altho there was a clear font change, for what reason i don’t know.  at this point I’m sure you are asking yourself why do i care about fonts?  you are stupid and obsessive.  well let me tell you, that sentence for the one guy 10 years form now who is trying to document or track down every descendets shirt design for whatever reason.  perhaps he thinks he got a bootleg and wants to make sure.  there is no website that documents this kind of nerdery to reference…oh wait there is THIS ONE!  you are welcome future shirt hunter :)

UPDATE FROM CHRIS SHARY:

Milo is dressed as urban folklore character Ned Kelly. Ned is a lot like an Australian version of Robin Hood. The helmet he’s wearing he made from old plows to protect him from a standoff with the police. They shot and eventually killed him. He’s a rad character. Riff, my Australian friend suggested we use a Ned reference, and it went over VERY well with the locals. Milo even came out at one show dressed as Ned!”

As i wrote this i thought Nerdery what a great name i should buy that URL and coin it.  is every good idea taken nowadays?  sheesh.  these nerds beat me to it.  http://nerdery.com

Shirt: Morrissey - Oh Manchester So Much To Answer For

Color: White

Brand: Gilden Softstyle

Source: yeah i went to the Morrissey show last night at Hollywood High.  yeah it was pretty fucking good.  solid set list, good energy, great crowd and awesome venue.  pretty much all you could ask for.  no complaints here.  I’m just glad it wasn’t a let down show.  it really delivered and i was really happy for that.  if that was the last Morrissey show i ever went to i would be ok with it.
